All The Waxing Do's And Don'ts For The Best Waxing Experience

If you’re brand new to waxing or even just thinking about trying it out, the experience can seem unusual and even a bit scary. Like… am I too hairy? Are they gonna see all of my lady bits? How do I even prepare?

Don’t fret, girlfriend! Happy Girl has you covered with plenty of dos and don’ts so you can go into your next waxing appointment feeling stress-free.

DO let your hair grow out a bit before your appointment. It should be at least as long as a long grain of rice. That way, your technician has something to apply the wax to and will be able to pull it from the root, leading to less bumps and breakouts.

DON’T shave in the days leading up to your appointment. If your legs are smooth or even stubbly, the wax will have nothing to grip on to and the process can be much more painful and irritating towards the skin. The salon might even turn you away if your hair isn’t long enough for them to work with.

DO go to a salon that specializes in waxing. These establishments tend to use more sanitary practices and know how to treat certain skin types that might require a bit of extra care and attention.

DON’T get a full wax at a nail salon that also offers waxing services. These establishments often practice “double dipping,” which is when hot wax is applied to the skin with a tool, then the same dipping tool is placed back in the wax and applied again. This is unsanitary and can lead to breakouts and skin issues.

DO wear comfortable pants or something light like a dress or a skirt. For undergarments, it’s best to wear “granny panties,” seamless underwear, or even go commando.

DON’T wear jeans or tight clothes. You’ll want your lady bits to be able to “breathe” after your appointment. You’ll feel much more comfortable and relaxed without the tight lacy panties-- they’ll still be there next week!

DO take some ibuprofen if you’re nervous about the pain before your wax.

DON’T try to use numbing creams, drink alcohol, or even caffeine to try and dull the pain. Numbing creams can make your skin more irritated and usually don’t make a big difference in helping with the pain. Alcohol and caffeine can cause you to bleed more than usual and potentially cause more pain as well.

DO leave your skin as it is for your appointment. Shower first and use a mild soap, but don’t overdo it on the products.

DON’T try to exfoliate right before a wax. This can make your skin more sensitive. Also, be careful about lotions, creams, perfumes, etc. This can make it more difficult for the wax to stick to the hair.

DO communicate with your specialist about any allergies you may have, as well as any skin conditions or “special spots” that might need some extra care or a more gentle touch-- or might need to be skipped overall.

DON’T leave your specialist in the dark about your skin conditions and what’s going on with your body. They’re here to help, not to judge! Professional technicians know how to treat sensitive skin, and communicating with them about where you’re sensitive can make the process more pain-free and enjoyable for you.
